Role Title: Christmas Day Volunteer

Location: Various Derbyshire locations, including Erewash, Long Eaton and Swadlincote

Time Commitment: Christmas Day, 2–6 hours

Role Overview:

We are seeking two compassionate and reliable volunteers to help us prepare a warm, festive and welcoming Christmas Day for the people staying with us in our supported housing in Erewash, Long Eaton or Swadlincote in Derbyshire. As a Christmas Day Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role in creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere for individuals who may otherwise be spending the day alone.

Working alongside a small number of staff, you’ll help prepare, cook and serve a Christmas meal while offering friendly conversation, support and a sense of connection to those staying with us over the holidays. Your contribution will help bring comfort, dignity and joy to a day that can be difficult for many.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with preparing, cooking and serving a Christmas Day meal in our shared kitchen.
  • Help create a warm, festive and inclusive atmosphere for residents.
  • Offer friendly conversation and social interaction to help reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation.
  • Work alongside staff to set up and tidy communal areas before and after the meal.
  • Support with small tasks such as laying tables, plating food, serving drinks and helping clear away.
  • Promote dignity, respect and inclusivity for all residents throughout the day.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A caring, friendly and approachable nature.
  • Patience, empathy and a genuine desire to support others.
  • Ability to work calmly and collaboratively in a small, busy environment.
  • Good communication skills and willingness to engage with residents.
  • An understanding of the sensitivity of Christmas for people experiencing homelessness or personal difficulties.
  • No previous experience is required – kindness and reliability are the most important qualities.
  • Volunteers must be comfortable working in a small shared kitchen space.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and maintaining professional boundaries.

What We Offer:

  • Guidance and support from staff on-site throughout the day.
  • A meaningful and rewarding experience supporting people to feel connected at Christmas.
  • An opportunity to make a direct impact on the wellbeing and happiness of residents.
  • A supportive, inclusive and appreciative team environment.
