Inspiring P3 Support Worker Recognised for Work with Young People

Randeep Lall, a dedicated support worker with P3 Charity, has been shortlisted for the prestigious National Children and Young People Awards (CYP). He and his team are attending the 2025 award ceremony at the ICC in Birmingham tonight (3rd October), celebrating excellence across the sector.

With a focus on putting the lives of children and young people first, the awards highlight innovation, best practice and outstanding commitment to quality care by individuals and organisations.

While Randeep was recognised for his outstanding work year-round, his decisive action that led to a young person’s life being saved ultimately led to his nomination.

Esther Barrett, P3 Charity’s Director of Operations for Children, Young People and Families, said: “Randeep’s actions on this shift were nothing short of heroic. His compassion, quick response and unwavering dedication have not only saved a life but inspired all of us. It is for these reasons that we believe Randeep is truly deserving of this award.”

Care and Support

Randeep recalls that he “wanted to make it [his] mission to help [the young person]” when she first arrived at the hostel, though this was difficult at first as she was initially quite disengaged. Gradually, he built rapport through their shared love of coffee, meeting each day for a chat over a cup in the office.

Once trust had been established, Randeep “tried to offer her a different perspective on life.” He describes her as “bright and a natural-born leader, with the potential to go far in life. All she needs is some encouragement and love.”

Despite excelling in most areas, the young person continued to struggle with her mental health and often turned to drugs to cope.

On the night of his shift, Randeep was informed that her wellbeing had deteriorated, and she was placed on suicide watch, requiring hourly checks to ensure her safety. During the final check, he discovered she had taken a life-threatening overdose. Without hesitation, Randeep called emergency services and performed resuscitation until paramedics arrived. Thanks to his quick thinking and decisive actions, she survived a potentially fatal incident.

Reflecting on that moment, Randeep said: “I’d never been in a situation like this before. I had five seconds to process everything and then all I thought was: I need to save her life. My brain just kicked in and I was surprised at how logical I was.”

He added: “I feel really humbled and honoured that I was in a position to be there for her when she needed it most. I am so grateful I was able to help.”

Following the incident, Randeep continued to provide outstanding support, working closely with her throughout her recovery. She is now living in more suitable accommodation and making significant progress towards stability and good health.

Despite his heroic actions, Randeep remains modest: “I don’t think I did anything exceptional compared to my colleagues. At P3 we are lucky to have in-depth training that gives us confidence in times of crisis. Even as a bank worker, I received the same training and believe any member of my team would have acted the same way.”

Randeep has been part of the P3 team for over a decade, working as a bank support worker alongside his busy philanthropic lifestyle. In 2009, he founded NishkamSWAT Charity, which provides food and support to people experiencing homelessness. His commitment to social good shaped his application to P3, where he sought work that aligned with his values.

Although his professional background was in IT, Randeep found his true calling in the charity sector. NishkamSWAT has since grown nationwide and was honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, recognising its dedication and positive impact on communities across the UK.

Laura Lawson, Regional Young People and Family Services Manager for P3 Charity, praises Randeep: “Randeep’s actions stand as an extraordinary example of dedication, compassion and courage. In a moment of crisis, when a resident’s life was in imminent danger, he acted with remarkable calm and determination, performing life-saving resuscitation until emergency services arrived, ultimately ensuring her survival.

His quick thinking and unwavering commitment turned what could have been a tragedy into a powerful story of hope and recovery. Beyond that single heroic act, Randeep continued to walk alongside the resident through her journey of healing, offering steadfast support that has profoundly impacted her life. His selflessness and devotion embody the very essence of care, and his actions not only saved a life but also set a shining example for us all.”

CYP Awards

Now shortlisted at the National Children and Young People Awards (CYP Awards), Randeep is attending the 2025 ceremony at the ICC in Birmingham tonight with his team. Regardless of the outcome, his presence at the event is a recognition of the bravery, compassion and quick thinking he demonstrated—not only in saving a life but in the lasting difference he makes to the young people he supports every day.

The whole of P3 Charity is celebrating this achievement and expressing gratitude for Randeep’s unwavering dedication to improving lives across the UK.

As Esther Barrett, P3 Charity’s Director of Operations for Children, Young People and Families, reflects: “It is with great honour that we nominated Randeep for this prestigious award. He has shown exceptional dedication and compassion in his role within our supported accommodation services.”
