At a time when housing pressures are growing in Wokingham, P3 Charity is launching a new floating support service in the borough, backed by more than five decades of experience supporting people facing homelessness. The service will offer tailored support to help residents maintain their tenancies and create stability, ensuring more people can get the help they need as they transition into independent living, ultimately preventing homelessness.
New figures show that 322 people sought housing assistance from Wokingham Borough Council in 2025, including 142 who were already homeless and 86 facing eviction, highlighting the growing pressure on local housing services.
P3 Charity’s new floating support service will directly respond to this challenge, helping young people aged 18 to 25 to access housing sustainment to prevent homelessness and to promote independence.
Floating support provides practical, personalised help to support people to live independently and maintain their existing housing, therefore avoiding homelessness. Floating support includes advice and guidance on issues such as housing, employment, education, budgeting and wellbeing, helping people to create structure and stability and manage personal finances as a way to avoid homelessness.
The support is primarily designed for people who may be transitioning from a range of challenging circumstances, including young people and adults with experience of social care, those who have faced or are at risk of homelessness, individuals recovering from previous trauma and those moving on from supported accommodation.
P3 Charity provides tailored, person‑centred assistance that strengthens stability and promotes independence. By recognising the unique needs and experiences of each person, the service will help people build the confidence, skills and resilience required to sustain safe housing and progress toward long‑term independence.
Laura Lawson, Regional Young People and Family Services Manager, said, “I am delighted to announce the launch of our new service supporting young people as they transition into independent living. This service has been designed to provide a safe, secure and structured pathway for young people moving towards independence, delivered through a strong multi‑agency partnership.
“Working collaboratively with the Council, local landlords and the organisation Hear for You, we will be offering floating support across three dedicated accommodation units. This coordinated approach ensures a consistent, constructive and high‑quality service for every young person we work with.
“Our mission is to unlock each young person’s potential, empowering them to gain the skills and confidence needed for independent living. Each resident will receive a personalised support plan, ensuring their individual needs, goals and aspirations are fully recognised and addressed.
“We look forward to making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the young people we serve.”
Known for its holistic approach, P3 Charity prides itself on delivering tailored, flexible support that ensures people get the right support at the right time.
Though P3’s floating support programme is new to the area, P3 Charity has been providing supported accommodation to young people in Wokingham since 2018, supporting 95 young people to safely move on to independent accommodation.
Christine Ayers, Service Co-ordinator for P3 Wokingham, said, “I have had the privilege of serving as a Service Manager in Wokingham for the past five years, and it brings me great joy to see our P3 services expanding across the borough. This development allows us to share our skills, knowledge and experience more widely, strengthening the support available to young people in our community.
Our joint‑working approach is key to bringing the whole service together. By collaborating closely with our partners, we can provide a seamless, consistent level of support that truly puts young people at the centre. Ultimately, our aim is to empower them to achieve bigger and better things – something that will always remain our core focus and commitment.”
Established in 1972, P3 Charity is a forward-thinking national charity and social enterprise that empowers people to become connected members of their communities. In Wokingham, P3’s new floating support service will work closely with local partners and residents to help young people maintain stable housing and access the support they need to live independently.
