Following our interview with Jodie and Simona for our last article ‘Inside P3’s Hoarding Service’, we caught up with Lauren Taylor, Service Manager for P3’s BeWell and Hoarding Services in Derbyshire, to hear more about how her team are making a difference to people’s lives across the county.
Lauren has been with P3 Charity for over 10 years. She began her journey as a Wellbeing Worker, progressed to a Senior role, and is now Service Manager for BeWell and Hoarding Services in Derbyshire, a position she has held for the past three years.
Within her day-to-day role, Lauren has a general oversight of both the BeWell and Hoarding services, leading a team of 30 staff members who support 125 people across both services. Lauren’s key responsibilities include staff supervision, performance management, safeguarding oversight, service delivery monitoring, risk management and external professional working. This includes supporting staff with their own personal development, training and reflective practice.
Lauren is also responsible for managing the referrals and caseloads that come in and out of service, ensuring that the people the service supports receive effective, outcome-focused support tailored to their support plan and needs. Lauren’s role requires strong leadership, effective communication, problem-solving and the ability to balance operational demands with compassionate, person-centred service delivery.
Today she joins us for a Q&A, sharing her insights into the BeWell Service and helping to raise awareness of the support it provides across the local community.
“[Our BeWell Service] supports people aged 18 and over who need support with their mental health, wellbeing and independent living. Most people who access our service [come to us] through Derbyshire County Council Adult Social Care via a personalised budget, though we do have a small amount of people who access our service privately.
“The goal around support is to encourage independence and reduce isolation. Some of the things we support with are: Budgeting advice, accessing the community, supporting with mental and general health appointments, emotional support and social activities. We adhere to a care plan from Adult Social Care that have identified the person’s current needs.”
“We support people aged 18 years and over who are experiencing hoarding tendencies due to their mental ill health or trauma. We provide a holistic approach to ensure the person is supported as a person and not just as someone who hoards.
“We liaise with external professionals to ensure a multi-agency approach is adhered too. We support people to mitigate risk of eviction and whilst doing this, we provide emotional wellbeing support and signpost to mental health services for the person to better understand their triggers and mental health needs which are contributing factors to their overall behaviours.”
“Our BeWell and Hoarding services follow a person-centred and compassionate approach to supporting individuals with mental health and wellbeing needs. We focus on building trusting relationships with the people we work with and providing tailored support that recognises everyone’s individual circumstances, strengths and goals.
“We take a holistic approach that supports mental health needs as well as wider issues that can impact a person’s wellbeing such as; social isolation, housing, finances, confidence and daily living skills. Part of this includes working closely with external agencies to ensure the people we support receive the right support at the right time for them, helping individuals achieve greater independence and improved quality of life.
“One of the key strengths of our team is the dedication and passion [shown by every colleague]. Our services promote a supportive and positive culture where colleagues genuinely care about making a difference. Teamwork, compassion and professionalism are at the heart of what we do and this helps us to create an environment where people feel safe, listened to and supported.
“We recognise that progress looks different for everyone. So, we celebrate the small achievements as well as major milestones, ensuring the people we work with feel empowered and supported throughout their journey with us.”
“The impact we see can be both small and life changing.
“For some people it might be about gaining the confidence to leave their home or engage with others again, while for others it may involve sustaining their tenancy, improving their mental health or reducing risks associated with hoarding behaviours.
“As a service, we aim to empower people rather than simply provide support for them. Building trust and consistent relationships is a key part of this and over time we often see people become more independent, more optimistic about their future and better equipped to manage challenges in their everyday lives.”
“Our team faces a variety of challenges daily due to the complex needs of the people we support within mental health and hoarding services. Many people may be experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, social isolation, self-neglect or difficulties engaging with support which can sometimes make building trust and maintaining engagement challenging. Within the hoarding service, there can also be significant risks relating to health and safety, safeguarding, tenancy issues and multi-agency involvement.
“Another challenge is managing high caseloads while ensuring every person continues to receive person-centred high-quality support. Staff can also experience emotionally demanding situations particularly when working with people in crisis or where progress may take time.
“We work around these challenges by maintaining strong communication, teamwork and regular staff support. Supervision, reflective practice and team meetings provide opportunities for staff to discuss concerns, share ideas and support one another.
As a manager, I encourage a culture of compassion, resilience and problem-solving, while ensuring staff wellbeing remains a priority. We celebrate small achievements and continue to work with the person we’re supporting at a pace that helps them to build trust with us and achieve sustainable outcomes.”
“I have seen a positive difference in both the people we support and our teams. The trips have provided opportunities that many of the people in service may not otherwise have experienced due to their personal barriers.
“For the people we support, these trips have helped increase confidence, reduce isolation, encourage social interaction and create positive experiences and memories. Over the years of the trips running, we have seen individuals step outside of their comfort zones, build friendships and engage more openly with others. In many cases, these experiences have had a noticeable impact on wellbeing, self-esteem and motivation.
“Since the fundraiser [in 2025], it has helped strengthen a sense of community within the service. People we’re supporting often feel valued knowing that additional opportunities are being created specifically to support their wellbeing and recovery journey. We are looking forward to what the next fundraiser will bring and what we can plan from this.”
“I’ve worked for P3 for over 10 years, I have progressed from Support Worker to Senior Support Worker, and now I’m a Service Manager. Each role has given me valuable experience and a deeper understanding of the importance of person-centred support within wellbeing and mental health services.
“As a Support Worker, my focus was on providing direct support to people; building trusting relationships, helping individuals work towards their goals and supporting them with their wellbeing, independence and daily challenges. It’s a role that taught me the importance of empathy, patience, active listening and understanding that every person’s journey is different.
“Progressing into a Senior Support Worker role gave me additional responsibilities including; supporting and guiding staff, overseeing complex cases, managing safeguarding concerns, and helping ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the service. This role strengthened my confidence, leadership abilities, decision-making skills and understanding of risk management and multi-agency working.
“Now as a Service Manager, my responsibilities include overseeing multiple services, managing staff teams, monitoring service performance, maintaining compliance and ensuring high-quality support is delivered across all areas. I also focus heavily on staff development, creating a positive team culture and ensuring services continue to meet the needs of clients effectively.
“My experience across all three roles has taught me that support work is about building trust, empowering people and recognising the importance of compassion, consistency and teamwork. It has also shown me how important strong leadership and staff support are in delivering positive outcomes for both the people we work alongside and teams.”
“I have stayed with P3 for 10 years as I’m very passionate about my role and supporting the vulnerable people that access our service and making meaningful difference to their lives and mental health.
“Throughout my time at P3, I’ve been given opportunities to grow professionally, improving my leadership skills and confidence which has helped me to progress into management roles with increasing responsibilities.
“I value P3’s morals and work culture, the commitment to person-centred support and teamwork align closely with my own values and approach. Over the years, I have built strong relationships with external agencies, people we support and colleagues across the organisation and particularly in my services.
“The complexity of the role continues to motivate me to remain committed to delivering a high-quality standard service, supporting staff development and shaping the services we deliver to ensure they have a lasting impact on the vulnerable people we support.
“P3 has always promoted a positive culture including team away days, annual conferences, and a commitment to staff wellbeing and positive improvements throughout the organisation.”
